“MENTORS” AT SVA<\/strong>
\n<\/a>Fancy a spot under the wing of youthquake photography superstar\u00a0Ryan McGinley<\/a><\/strong>? What about with author-turned-Oprah foe-turned-art dealer\u00a0James Frey<\/strong>? Or how about with brainyArtforum<\/em>\u00a0editor\u00a0Tim Griffin<\/strong>? Well, those are the kinds of opportunities that 80+\u00a0School of Visual Arts\u00a0<\/strong>photography BFA students got with the most recent round of the institution\u2019s “Mentors” program. The pairings are set up by photography department chair\u00a0Stephen Frailey<\/strong>, who chooses mentorships based on the direction of the student’s work. As to the structure of the mentorships, it is described as “variable” in character, depending on what kind of sparks fly between participants. The artistic results of the 2010 collaborations are currently on view in a\u00a0show<\/a>\u00a0at the SVA\u2019s\u00a0Visual Arts Gallery<\/strong>\u00a0at 601 West 26 Street, Mar. 19-Apr. 3, 2010.<\/p>\n

Worthy figures who donated their time as SVA mentors include critic-curators\u00a0Vince Aletti\u00a0<\/strong>(teamed with\u00a0Aaron Boldt<\/strong>),\u00a0Mia Fineman<\/strong>\u00a0(Alex Bush<\/strong>) and\u00a0Neville Wakefield<\/strong>\u00a0(Nathaniel C.
