An ideal event for trend-spotters, this collaboration between the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/The+Museum+of+Modern+Art\" title=\"The Museum of Modern Art\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of Modern Art<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Lincoln+Center\" title=\"Lincoln Center\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">Lincoln Center<\/a>\u00a0has offered New Yorkers their first opportunity to see such indies as &#8220;Once,&#8221; Half Nelson&#8221; and &#8220;Junebug&#8221; &#8211; and that&#8217;s only in recent years. In the past, audiences have uncovered early works by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Kevin+Smith\" title=\"Kevin Smith\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Smith<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Spike+Lee\" title=\"Spike Lee\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">Spike Lee<\/a>\u00a0and even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Steven+Spielberg\" title=\"Steven Spielberg\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Spielberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; margin: 0px\">We&#8217;re not promising that you&#8217;ll stumble across the next\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Pedro+Almodovar\" title=\"Pedro Almodovar\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">Pedro Almod\u00f3var<\/a>\u00a0(another ND\/NF find), but several of this year&#8217;s 26 features are destined for discovery. Some will become art-house faves, and at least one movie a year is usually honored by Oscar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; margin: 0px\">Many have already proven themselves at other festivals. &#8220;Trouble the Water&#8221; won a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year, for its moving portrayal of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/New+Orleans\" title=\"New Orleans\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">New Orleans\u00a0<\/a>residents trying to recover after Hurricane Katrina. The South is also the setting for &#8220;Ballast,&#8221; the visually striking story of an estranged family stung by tragedy (and another Sundance prizewinner).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; margin: 0px\">As always, foreign filmmakers have a strong presence on the program. &#8220;Jellyfish,&#8221; about several disparate women in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Tel+Aviv\" title=\"Tel Aviv\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">Tel Aviv<\/a>, was nominated for 10 Israeli Academy Awards. The Korean horror movie &#8220;Epitaph,&#8221; which is set in a haunted hospital, has been a solid success at home. And French audiences have embraced &#8220;La France,&#8221; a World War I drama layered with surprising musical moments.<\/p>\n<p editor_id=\"mce_editor_0\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; margin: 0px\">For local flavor, consider &#8220;Momma&#8217;s Man,&#8221; about a married slacker who avoids responsibility by holing up in his parents&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Manhattan\" title=\"Manhattan\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">Manhattan<\/a>\u00a0loft. And in the compelling documentary &#8220;Moving Midway,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/New+York\" title=\"New York\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">New York<\/a>\u00a0film critic\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Godfrey+Cheshire\" title=\"Godfrey Cheshire\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">Godfrey Cheshire<\/a>\u00a0heads back home to explore the complex history of his family&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/North+Carolina\" title=\"North Carolina\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" target=\"_blank\">North Carolina<\/a>\u00a0plantation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; margin: 0px\">There are other movies worth watching out for, too, including the Mexican thrillers &#8220;La Zona&#8221; and &#8220;Sleep Dealer.&#8221; And if you want to be among the first to see the French coming-of-age tale &#8220;Water Lilies,&#8221; you&#8217;ll have to move fast; it opens in theaters next week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; margin: 0px\">Screenings will be held at MoMA and Lincoln Center&#8217;s Walter Reade Theater.
