D. Salinger&#8217;s masterpiece has long been the spark of debate, but in the high school classroom it still might be the best book of its kind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px; color: #444444; margin-top: 10px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px\" class=\"postBody\"><span id=\"aptureStartContent\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px; color: #444444; line-height: 1.4em\">On 27 January 2010 J. D. Salinger died at the age of 91 and the world promptly began mourning him. Several eulogies were written, printed and posted in various media sources [including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.popmatters.com\/pm\/feature\/120303-j.d.-salingers-seymour-a-eulogy\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #336699; border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-bottom-color: #336699\">a eulogy of Salinger\u2019s Seymour Glass<\/a>\u00a0written for\u00a0<em>PopMatters<\/em>\u00a0by Chadwick Jenkins (5 February 2010)]. Once again, as happens every five years or so, it became popular to wax poetic about the literary achievement that was a nice little book called\u00a0<em>The Catcher in the Rye<\/em>. Accordingly, as happens every five years or so, it also became popular to talk about how overrated\u00a0<em>The Catcher in the Rye<\/em>\u00a0is (see Aaron Sager\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.popmatters.com\/pm\/column\/120618-why-i-dislike-rye-not-be-holden-to-salingers-catcher\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #336699; border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-bottom-color: #336699\">\u201cWhy I Dislike \u2018Rye\u2019: Not be-Holden to Salinger\u2019s \u2018Catcher\u2019\u201d<\/a>, for example,\u00a0<em>PopMatters<\/em>\u00a011 February 2010)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px; color: #444444; line-height: 1.4em\"><em>The Catcher in the Rye<\/em>\u00a0holds a very singular place in the world of literature. It\u2019s a classic to be sure, but it\u2019s often thought of as\u00a0<em>the<\/em>\u00a0classic\u2014more than a coming of age novel; more than a great coming of age novel.\u00a0<em>The Catcher in the Rye<\/em>\u00a0is the\u00a0<em>Citizen Kane<\/em>\u00a0of coming of age novels, which means it pulls off a much more difficult trick than actually being the best coming of age novel ever written; it\u2019s widely accepted as the greatest coming of age novel ever written.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, Geneva, Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; color: #444444\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">Much like\u00a0<em>Citizen Kane<\/em>\u00a0it is more than a work of art.\u00a0<em>The Catcher in the Rye<\/em>\u00a0is the answer to a poll question. \u201cWhat is the greatest coming of age tale ever written?\u201d for example, or \u201cWhat is the best young adult novel ever penned?\u201d and of course the inevitable backlash of \u201cWhat is the most overrated American literary classic in history?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, Geneva, Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; color: #444444\" class=\"Apple-style-span\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.popmatters.com\/pm\/post\/120695-the-catcher-in-the-rye-the-greatest-book-of-its-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">click to continue reading at PopMatters.com<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from PopMatters The Catcher in the Rye: The Greatest Book of Its Time The late J.
