The Rolling Stones<\/h2>\n<p class=\"post-author\" style=\"margin-top: 3px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; text-transform: none; font-family: Arial; font-size: 91.666%; color: #808080\">By\u00a0<span style=\"text-transform: uppercase\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theboard.blogs.nytimes.com\/author\/ldownes\/\" title=\"Posts by Lawrence Downes\" style=\"color: #004276; text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\">LAWRENCE DOWNES<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">A small, strange news item earlier this month caught my eye:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 14px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-weight: normal; font-size: 133%; line-height: 1.3125em; letter-spacing: 0px; text-align: left; word-spacing: normal; text-decoration: none; color: #333333; overflow-x: visible; overflow-y: visible; width: auto; height: 1%; padding: 0px\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/a594.ac-images.myspacecdn.com\/images01\/55\/l_11c84a85c02e8a2e777049eb674d16b1.jpg\" alt=\"Free All Hell's Angels\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"15\" width=\"227\" height=\"113\" align=\"right\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u201cA plot by the Hells Angels to kill Mick Jagger nearly 40 years ago failed when the would-be assassins, traveling by boat, encountered a storm and were thrown overboard, according to a new BBC radio series.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">Talk about your memorable mental images: a tiny boat in churning seas, stuffed with large men in leather vests, their bare, hairy arms flailing at the waves with paddles \u2014 or are those pool cues? The big capsize, the long dogpaddle to shore, the dejected ride home, chastened hit men shivering on their Harleys, dripping from beard to boots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">Maybe the story is true, but I doubt it. It\u2019s based on a 1985 F.B.I. interview with John Joseph Miller, a former Hell\u2019s Angel who became a government informer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">By his account, the Angels were furious at being fired as bodyguards for the Stones after the group\u2019s disastrous 1969 concert at the Altamont Speedway in California, where Angels beat and fatally stabbed a fan. They plotted murderous revenge by sea, Mr. Miller said, because that was the easiest way onto Mr. Jagger\u2019s heavily guarded Long Island estate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">The F.B.I. report is on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesmokinggun.com\/archive\/years\/2008\/0303081jagger1.html\" style=\"color: #004276; text-decoration: underline\">The Smoking Gun<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">Mr. Miller\u2019s account is dubious, for a few reasons beyond the simple fact that bikers generally aren\u2019t sailors, and vice versa. It\u2019s a secondhand account \u2014 Mr. Miller said he never was a member of the Angels\u2019 New York City chapter, which supposedly hatched the plot. And Mark Young, the former agent who relates the tale to the BBC, said it happened on Long Island Sound. Mr. Jagger\u2019s home was in the Hamptons, on the Atlantic Ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">We\u2019re grateful to Mr. Young and Mr. Miller, though, because they led us to the radio series on BBC4 that rehashes the plot. It\u2019s called \u201cThe F.B.I. at 100,\u201d and it\u2019s a lot of fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">The British reporter is named Tom Mangold, and it\u2019s hard to listen to him and not think of Opal, the BBC reporter played by Geraldine Chaplin in Robert Altman\u2019s great 1975 movie, \u201cNashville.\u201d You may recall her walking through a school-bus parking lot, talking into a tape recorder while trying to capture the essence of America, or something:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u201cThe buses! The buses are empty and look almost menacing, threatening, as so many yellow dragons watching me with their hollow, vacant eyes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">The sonorous Mr. Mangold reaches almost as far in his portentous enthusiasm. This is him on the F.B.I.\u2019s campaign against organized crime:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u201cThe Mafia was the rotten core of America, and its fat cats fed free off the body of the nation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">And on that motorcycle gang:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u201cThere was one group of organized criminals the bureau. had never tackled. They may have had a slightly wacky and romantic image, but in truth they were violent, dangerous, largely impenetrable, and at the extremes, drug dealers and killers on an industrial scale: THE HELL\u2019S ANGELS.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">I\u2019d share more but I don\u2019t want to ruin it for you. A series about the F.B.I. from a country where a \u201choover\u201d is a vacuum cleaner \u2014 you don\u2019t see such a thing very often, and it\u2019s something to savor, or rather savour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">Here\u2019s how to hear this odd bit of radio:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 7px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px\"> <span style=\"color: #333333\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">1.
