BROWNE, 1922-2009<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-weight: bold; color: #012952\" class=\"articletitle\">BGSU professor began popular culture center<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>BOWLING GREEN &#8211; Ray B. Browne, 87, who created an academic discipline and a national movement by studying the stuff of everyday life &#8211; whether comic books, fast food, pop tunes, or situation comedies &#8211; died Thursday in his home of congestive heart failure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0879728698?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bigjimind-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0879728698\" title=\"click to purchase at Amazon\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51Y2EW1J55L._SL500_AA240_.jpg\" align=\"left\" height=\"240\" width=\"240\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>&#8220;He&#8217;s the father of popular culture studies,&#8221; said Gary Hoppenstand, a professor of American studies at Michigan State University, and a popular culture graduate student at Bowling Green State University and protege of Mr. Browne&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s done more to affect studies in the humanities than any other individual the last 30 or 40 years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Browne began the Center for the Study of Popular Culture in 1968 at BGSU. The Popular Culture Library followed.<\/p>\n<p>In 1973, despite detractors, he began a distinct department of popular culture. His history of the popular culture movement&#8217;s early struggle is called Against Academia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ray opened the windows of the academy, just opened them up,&#8221; said Michael Marsden, one of the department&#8217;s first faculty members, now dean and academic vice president of St. Norbert College, De Pere, Wis. &#8220;We have the people&#8217;s culture being studied, and we&#8217;re learning how complex and wonderful and significant it is.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The BGSU department was the first of its kind.<\/p>\n<p>[ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toledoblade.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20091025\/NEWS13\/910250329\" target=\"_blank\">click to continue reading at ToledoBlade.com<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from the Toledo Blade RAY B.
