Rosenquist Writ Large, by Himself<\/h1>\n

\u201cTrue Colors: The Real Life of the Art World,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Anthony Haden-Guest wrote that the painter\u00a0James Rosenquist<\/a>\u00a0possessed, most of the time, a \u201cpreternaturally healthy glow, like a hand-colored photograph.\u201d You could say something similar about Mr. Rosenquist\u2019s new memoir, which is an unexpected treat \u2014 it\u2019s a ruddy and humble book, lighted from within by the author\u2019s plainspoken, blue-collar charm.<\/p>\n

Mr. Rosenquist came of age as a Pop artist in Manhattan during the 1960s, alongside\u00a0Andy Warhol<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Roy Lichtenstein<\/a>. He knew everyone, and seemed to be everywhere. He shared a studio building by the Lower Manhattan waterfront with\u00a0Ellsworth Kelly<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Agnes Martin<\/a>;\u00a0Jasper Johns<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Robert Rauschenberg<\/a>\u00a0painted nearby. He drank in the Cedar Tavern with\u00a0Willem de Kooning<\/a>\u00a0and LeRoi Jones.<\/p>\n

Mr. Rosenquist describes strange nights in Hollywood accompanying the actor\u00a0Dennis Hopper<\/a>, who \u201cprowled through the unlocked houses of aspiring actors and actresses.\u201d Mr. Rosenquist gave a party for Abbie Hoffman\u2019s future girlfriend during which people danced indoors between lighted road flares. The Warhol star Ultra Violet cavorted topless on Mr. Rosenquist\u2019s front lawn in East Hampton one Sunday morning just as church was letting out. He was not all work and no play.<\/p>\n
