A former bare-knuckle boxer, he received a seven-year prison term in 1974 for armed robbery and has since had his sentence repeatedly extended for a series of attacks on guards and fellow convicts.<\/nyt_text><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; color: black; font-size: medium; line-height: 24px\"><span style=\"line-height: normal; font-size: 13px\" class=\"Apple-style-span\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/04\/movies\/04lim.html\" title=\"Tom Hardy as the British career criminal Charlie Bronson in \u201cBronson.\u201d Courtesy of Magnet Releasing\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/2009\/10\/04\/arts\/04lim_650.jpg\" height=\"300\" width=\"450\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the British press he is often called the country\u2019s most violent prisoner and \u2014 thanks to his knack for setting off riots and engineering hostage situations \u2014 its most expensive inmate.<\/p>\n<p>But in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/453040\/Bronson\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cBronson,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0a stylized film biography by the Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, this tabloid legend is above all a kind of performance artist, a savage showman for whom, Mr. Refn said, \u201cviolence is the brush and life is the canvas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This may seem like an overly romantic way to portray the life of a man who has been held in solitary confinement for a total of some three decades. But when Mr. Refn, 39, identifies Bronson\u2019s aggression as a perverse means of creative expression, he is, in a sense, speaking from experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to think art had to be a destructive medium,\u201d Mr. Refn said over lunch in Manhattan recently. \u201cWhen I began making films I was 24. It was like punk rock.
