For all that time, it has trusted its readers, more or less, to find what they&#8217;re looking for.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.harvestmkt.com\/images\/cliffsreadless_small_wrvm.jpg\" alt=\"Read Less\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"15\" width=\"220\" height=\"329\" align=\"left\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px\">Not anymore. Today saw the introduction of &#8220;Inside the\u00a0<em style=\"padding-right: 1px\">Times<\/em>,&#8221; a new multi-page index of that day&#8217;s highlights, in print and online, which runs on pages 2, 3 and 4 of section A. The purpose is &#8220;to help readers navigate and mine the paper and its Web site,&#8221; according to an editor&#8217;s note.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px\">Newspapers are such instruments of habit that any change at all, no matter how necessary or obvious in retrospect, is likely to encounter knee-jerk opposition. I don&#8217;t want to give into that impulse&#8230;but &#8220;Inside the<em style=\"padding-right: 1px\">Times<\/em>\u00a0feels a bit excessive &#8212; a barrier to reaching the stories rather than a map to finding them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px\">As one close\u00a0<em style=\"padding-right: 1px\">Times<\/em>\u00a0reader pointed out to me, it&#8217;s an odd decision to devote so much prime space to teasers at a time when the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer.com\/node\/32911\" style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #ec5219\" target=\"_blank\">news hole is already shrinking<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; and when more and more readers aren&#8217;t bothering with the physical paper in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0[\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.portfolio.com\/views\/blogs\/mixed-media\/2008\/03\/25\/ny-times-now-with-cliffs-notes\" target=\"_blank\">click to view full piece at Portfolio.com<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from\u00a0Jeff Bercovici&#8217;s Mixed Media Blog at Portfolio.com &#8216;NY Times&#8217;: Now With Cliffs Notes The New York Times\u00a0has been around for 156 years.
