It was an eerie sight, though few seemed to mind:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/artists\/profile\/3647\/jeff-koons\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000; font-weight: 400\" class=\"aiartists\">Jeff Koons<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/search\/results\/?query=Nancy+Pelosi\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000; font-weight: 400\" class=\"aiartists\">Nancy Pelosi<\/a>\u00a0were chatting and posing for photographs together, just one of the unexpected friendships that seemed to blossom at the<strong>National Arts Awards<\/strong>, which included an unusual mixture of representatives from the nation\u2019s art, business, and political intelligentsia.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/media\/image\/163582\/1_promo_1_ruschagago.jpg\" align=\"right\" height=\"150\" width=\"199\" hspace=\"15\" border=\"0\" \/>The ceremony, organized by\u00a0<strong>Americans for the Arts<\/strong>, honored individuals for their contributions to the nation\u2019s artistic life:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/search\/results\/?query=Robert+Redford\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000; font-weight: 400\" class=\"aiartists\">Robert Redford<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/search\/results\/?query=Salman+Rushdie\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000; font-weight: 400\" class=\"aiartists\">Salman Rushdie<\/a>, philanthropist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/search\/results\/?query=Sidney+Harman\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000; font-weight: 400\" class=\"aiartists\">Sidney Harman<\/a>, Bank of America (accepted by Chief Marketing Officer\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/search\/results\/?query=Anne+Finucane\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000; font-weight: 400\" class=\"aiartists\">Anne Finucane<\/a>), and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/search\/results\/?query=Ed+Ruscha\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000; font-weight: 400\" class=\"aiartists\">Ed Ruscha<\/a>, who seemed like an ideal \u2014 and definitively American \u2014 representative from the visual arts world.<\/p>\n<p>Ruscha has wielded the American automobile as an artistic tool, making art from gas stations photographed on trips across the West and images snapped while cruising the Sunset Strip on a Sunday morning. His contributions to the 2005\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/search\/results\/?query=Venice+Biennale\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000; font-weight: 400\" class=\"aiartists\">Venice Biennale<\/a>\u00a0showed the exteriors of corporate office buildings and factories, the anonymous workshops of American capitalism.<\/p>\n<p>Author\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/search\/results\/?query=James+Frey\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000; font-weight: 400\" class=\"aiartists\">James Frey<\/a>, who commissioned from Ruscha a work that reads \u201cPublic Stoning\u201d after being dragged through the media for his stretching of the truth in his memoir\u00a0<em>A Million Little Pieces<\/em>, was similarly affectionate in a video tribute to the artist. \u201cEd Ruscha is the king of California!\u201d he exclaimed. \u201cEd Ruscha is the coolest guy in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Ruscha seemed pleasantly bemused about the plaudits he was receiving.
