Popeyes chicken founder dies<\/h2>\n

Al Copeland<\/a>, who became rich selling spicy fried chicken and notorious for his flamboyant lifestyle, died Sunday at a clinic near\u00a0Munich<\/a>,\u00a0Germany<\/a>. He was 64.<\/p>\n

The founder of the Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken chain grew up in\u00a0New Orleans<\/a>. Copeland sold his car at age 18 for enough money to open his own one-man doughnut shop. He went on to spend 10 modestly successful years in the doughnut business.<\/p>\n

The opening of a\u00a0Kentucky Fried Chicken<\/a>\u00a0restaurant in New Orleans in 1966, however, caught Copeland’s eye. Inspired by KFC’s success, Copeland in 1971 used his doughnut profits to open a restaurant, Chicken on the Run. (“So fast you get your chicken before you get your change.”) After six months, Copeland chose a spicier\u00a0Louisiana<\/a>\u00a0Cajun-style recipe and reopened the restaurant, eventually calling it Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken after\u00a0Gene Hackman<\/a>‘s character in the film “French Connection<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

Copeland frequently made headlines away from his business empire. His hobbies included racing 50-foot powerboats, touring New Orleans in\u00a0Rolls-Royces<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Lamborghinis<\/a>, and outfitting his\u00a0Lake Pontchartrain<\/a>\u00a0home with lavish Christmas decorations, including half-a-million lights and a 3-story-tall snowman.<\/p>\n

<\/span>2 cups Uncle ben’s long grain rice (cooked); 1 \u2212 16 oz. can Red chili beans in chili gravy; 1 teas. Chili powder; 1\/4 teas. Cumin; Dash garlic salt. In saucepan, heat beans without letting them boil.Stir in chili powder, cumin and garlic salt.
