The festival is the subject of the film \u201cSoul Power.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, fantasy; font-size: 13px; line-height: normal\" class=\"Apple-style-span\"><nyt_byline type=\" \" version=\"1.0\"><\/nyt_byline><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 10pt\" class=\"byline\">By\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/p\/jon_pareles\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" style=\"color: #000066\" title=\"More Articles by Jon Pareles\">JON PARELES<\/a><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: normal\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: black; font-size: medium; line-height: 24px\">LEFTOVERS can be tasty.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, the director of the new documentary\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/455364\/Soul-Power\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cSoul Power,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0was a film editor in 1995 for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/135880\/When-We-Were-Kings\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cWhen We Were Kings,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0the Oscar-winning documentary directed by Leon Gast about the Rumble in the Jungle, the 1974 heavyweight world championship bout between Muhammad Ali and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/f\/george_foreman\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\" title=\"More articles about George Foreman.\">George Foreman<\/a>\u00a0in Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire (now Congo).<\/p>\n<p>That fight had a huge sideshow: Zaire \u201974, a three-day music festival of American soul alongside African music, headlined by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/b\/james_brown\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\" title=\"More articles about James Brown.\">James Brown<\/a>\u00a0and filmed by the same crew that was in Zaire for the fight. \u201cSoul Power\u201d presents that festival from its precarious beginnings to the finale of a shirtless, sweating James Brown singing to an African audience, \u201cSay It Loud \u2014 I\u2019m Black and I\u2019m Proud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The festival was a striking sociocultural moment.
