He was 83.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; color: black; font-size: medium; line-height: 24px\"><span style=\"line-height: normal; font-size: 13px\" class=\"Apple-style-span\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/media\/photo\/2009-06\/robert-colescott_47478024.jpg\" height=\"297\" width=\"450\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>His death was confirmed by his wife, Jandava Cattron, who said he had suffered for several years from Parkinsonian syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Colescott represented the United States at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/subjects\/v\/venice_biennale\/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\" title=\"More articles about the Venice Biennale.\">Venice Biennale<\/a>\u00a0in 1997, the first African-American to do so. By then he was well known for pitting the painterly against the political to create giddily joyful, destabilized compositions that satirized, and offended, without regard to race, creed, gender or political leaning.<\/p>\n<p>People of all colors haunt Mr. Colescott\u2019s paintings, mostly as chimerical stereotypes that exchange attributes freely. Their mottled skin tones often suggest one race seeping through another. Their tumultuous interactions evoke a volatile mixture of suspicion, desire, pain and vitality.
