It was the 1960s and Sam Spade was an ad man for the Big Three automakers while his beautiful wife, Judy, cared for their three boys. Sam liked to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer.com\/2009\/style\/andy-spade-giant-new-york\" title=\"Keeping himself entertained: Andy Spade at Partners &amp; Spade. One day he didn\u2019t come home for six months, so Judy put the house on the market. The day the house sold, Sam reappeared and begged for another chance. He\u2019d found a job in Phoenix, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018O.K., one more shot,\u2019\u201d Judy told me. \u201cWhen we finally got out to Phoenix, that turned out to be a lie\u2014he didn\u2019t actually have a job there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t take long for Sam to disappear for good. It was 1968 and Judy and the boys\u20148-year-old Bryan, 6-year-old Andy and 4-year-old David\u2014were pretty much stranded in the desert.
