Photograph: Bob Elsdale\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; background-repeat: no-repeat; padding: 0px\">Introduced as part of a misguided attempt to control beetle infestation, the poisonous cane toad quickly supplanted its intended prey as one of the most destructive and hated creatures in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/australia\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse; background-repeat: no-repeat; color: #005689; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\">Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; background-repeat: no-repeat; padding: 0px\">Now Queensland authorities believe the collective loathing in which they are held will galvanise residents into taking part in a mass cull on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; background-repeat: no-repeat; padding: 0px\">Townsville council wants people to track down and bag up the toads, which breed rapidly, eat voraciously and kill most\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/animals\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse; background-repeat: no-repeat; color: #005689; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\">animals<\/a>\u00a0that dare to eat them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; background-repeat: no-repeat; padding: 0px\">The live animals should then be taken to a collection point the following day where they will be weighed and either frozen or gassed to death, with the carcasses turned into fertiliser.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; background-repeat: no-repeat; padding: 0px\">Only unharmed animals will be accepted according to the rules of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.townsville.qld.gov.au\/services\/departments\/integ_sustainability\/activities\/toaddayout\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse; background-repeat: no-repeat; color: #005689; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\">Toad Day Out event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; background-repeat: no-repeat; padding: 0px\">Toad Day Out organisers are offering prizes for people with the biggest toad and the highest total weight of toads.
