This occurrence will be the closest approach to Earth by an asteroid of this size that scientists have known about in advance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A \u201cpotentially hazardous\u201d asteroid is scheduled to pass by Earth in 2029, marking the \u201cclosest approach\u201d to the planet by one of its size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The asteroid is called Apophis, a name that comes from the ancient Egyptian god of chaos, according to Britannica<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, despite the alarming-sounding name, NASA’s website<\/a> noted it will \u201csafely pass\u201d about 20,000 miles from Earth on April 13, 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NASA added that this distance is \u201ccloser than the distance of many satellites in geosynchronous orbit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
