was an early casualty of cancel culture. It was 2013. I was 17, and I had written a story for\u00a0The Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em>\u00a0about getting rejected from college that went viral. I bemoaned not having \u201ckiller SAT scores\u201d and \u201ctwo moms,\u201d and the whole thing was a joke. Except, it attracted millions of reactions, most of them bad, that were chronicled all over the internet, but mostly on a website that I\u2019d never visited before called Twitter. \u201cI wish I could meet Suzy Lee Weiss so I could punch that whiny bitch in the face\u201d is a representative tweet about me from around this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overwhelmed, though deeply grateful my braces had already come off, I went on the\u00a0Today<\/a><\/em>\u00a0show<\/a>\u00a0to clear my name, and hoped that after I did, I would never have to talk about the ordeal again. Reader, I\u2019ve been talking about it for over a decade. But I\u2019ll save the whole story for another day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting canceled<\/a>\u00a0like this, a thoroughly\u00a0modern phenomenon<\/a>, is something\u00a0we\u2019ve written<\/a>\u00a0about<\/a>\u00a0many times<\/a>\u00a0here at<\/a>\u00a0The Free Press<\/em>, and for good reason. Cancel culture ruins individual lives, but it also puts all of us on tenterhooks. By making an example of one person, it sends a message to everyone else: \u201cStay in line, or you\u2019ll be next.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
