Go\u00f1i moved to Los Angeles seven years ago, he went on a date. The pair strolled around the serene Venice Canals, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/la\/article\/los-angeles-ice-bath-meetups-venice-19626257.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">small Westside enclave<\/a>\u00a0with homes separated by shallow waterways. \u201cWhat is this place?\u201d Go\u00f1i remembers thinking. \u201cAnd also, how many millions of dollars do you need to make to live in this place?\u201d The area\u2019s natural beauty stuck with Go\u00f1i, who originally hails from Madrid. \u201cI was really attracted to that, but I thought it was never going to be possible to live here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when the pandemic surged through Southern California a few years ago, rents dropped all across Los Angeles County. Suddenly, Go\u00f1i had some wiggle room to negotiate on monthly rental rates, and he nabbed a one-bedroom apartment in the back of a house along one of the canals.
