Telescopes spy a monster radio jet streaming from a bright and early object in the universe<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The jet of radio waves is the biggest ever detected so early in the history of the universe, astronomers reported Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. \u2014 Telescopes around the world have spotted a monster radio jet streaming from a quasar dating back to the first 1 billion years of the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At double the width of our\u00a0Milky Way galaxy<\/a>, this jet of radio waves is the biggest ever detected so early in the\u00a0history of the universe<\/a>, astronomers reported Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Radio jets like this are not uncommon in our\u00a0cosmic neighborhood<\/a>. But they\u2019ve been elusive in the distant early universe \u2014 until now \u2014 because of the obscuring cosmic microwave background left over from the Big Bang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s only because this object is so extreme that we can observe it from Earth, even though it\u2019s really far away,\u201d lead author Anniek Gloudemans of the National Science Foundation\u2019s NoirLab said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
