{"id":1362,"date":"2009-02-07T11:42:37","date_gmt":"2009-02-07T18:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bigjimindustries.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2009\/02\/ars-tv-artis\/"},"modified":"2009-02-07T11:43:15","modified_gmt":"2009-02-07T18:43:15","slug":"ars-tv-artis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bigjimindustries.com\/wordpress\/2009\/02\/07\/ars-tv-artis\/","title":{"rendered":"Ars Recapture Artis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\"><a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/06\/movies\/06lith.html\" target=\"_blank\">from The New York Times<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Capturing History With Video of the TV<\/h1>\n<p class=\"byline\" style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 10pt\">By MANOHLA DARGIS<\/p>\n<p>A number of years ago, the critic Amy Taubin, in a hilarious review of a misbegotten movie from Abel Ferrara, wrote that it \u201cinspires the ontological question \u2018What are films, and why is this not one of them?\u2019\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/2009\/02\/06\/arts\/06lithuania_650.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"436\" height=\"260\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The same question buzzed through my mind while watching the weirdly compelling if almost unclassifiable \u201cLithuania and the Collapse of the USSR,\u201d the latest work from the filmmaker, poet, archivist and cinematic avenging angel Jonas Mekas. \u201cLithuania,\u201d I hasten to add, is certainly not misbegotten \u2014 but given that this nearly five-hour work consists almost entirely of bits and pieces of news programs shot off a color television with a video camera, it does inspire some aesthetic rumination.<\/p>\n<p>The question of what constitutes a movie in the digital age is far too large to tackle here, though it is worth noting that \u201cLithuania\u201d was shot in video and will be shown in video. (A different version is being presented as a four-monitor video installation at the Maya Stendhal Gallery in Chelsea, through Feb. 21, as part of an exhibition of Mr. Mekas\u2019s latest work.) Increasing numbers of movies are actually videos or are digitally created \u2014 there is not a single film frame involved \u2014 crucial information that often goes unmentioned and even unnoticed in reviews. For artists like Mr. Mekas, who has been shooting in video for years, such distinctions seem irrelevant.
