Stephens filed a patent for a so-called myriad reflector in 1916, the dawn of disco was still decades away. But their glittering mirror ball\u2014destined for ballrooms, nightclubs, dance pavilions, and skating rinks\u2014was made with revelry in mind. Shiny orbs hovered over bandstands hosting jazz musicians in the 1920s, twinkled above dancers\u00a0in\u00a0<em>Casablanca<\/em>\u00a0(1942), and dazzled a club scene in\u00a0<em>Some Like It Hot<\/em>\u00a0(1959).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.architecturaldigest.com\/issues\/1970\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1970s<\/a>, when that super-glam, sparkly club culture\u2014disco!\u2014at last arrived, the mirror ball fit right in, a silvery staple of underground New York dance spots like The Loft, The Gallery, and, later, legendary nightclub\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.architecturaldigest.com\/story\/studio-54-documentary-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studio 54<\/a>, where revelers grooved beneath its disorienting shimmer.
