The shift in polarity indicates the halfway point of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-solar-maximum-and-when-will-it-happen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>solar maximum<\/u><\/a>, the height of solar activity, and the beginning of the shift toward solar minimum.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last time\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>the sun<\/u><\/a>&#8216;s magnetic field flipped was toward the end of 2013. But what causes this switch in polarity, and is it dangerous? Let&#8217;s take a deep look at the sun&#8217;s magnetic field reversal and investigate the effects it could have on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Earth<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand the magnetic field&#8217;s reversal, first, it&#8217;s important to be familiar with the solar cycle. This approximately 11-year cycle of solar activity is driven by the sun&#8217;s magnetic field and is indicated by the frequency and intensity of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sunspots-formation-discovery-observations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sunspots<\/a>\u00a0visible on the surface.
