Reports are that to bankroll the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/megalopolis-francis-ford-coppola-challenges-distribution-1235867556\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$120 million epic<\/a>\u00a0he has literally mortgaged the farm, or vineyard. The investment is slated to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We \u2014 and he \u2014 have all been here before.\u00a0Coppola last went into hock for another long-aborning and cost-overrunning project, which 45 years ago, almost to the day, also premiered at Cannes: the now legendary\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/apocalypse-now-review-movie-1979-1235172359\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apocalypse Now<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1979).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, Coppola was bathing in the afterglow of one of the most astonishing back-to-back double, or triple, plays in the industry\u2019s history:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/godfather-review-1972-original-movie-986404\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Godfather<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1972) and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/godfather-2-review-part-ii-1974-original-movie-757543\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Godfather: Part II<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1974), the operatic two-part saga of mob family business in which\u00a0organized crime serves less as a metaphor for American capitalism than its purest expression (\u201cMichael, we\u2019re bigger than U.S. Steel!\u201d); and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/francis-ford-coppola-the-conversation-anniversary-1235873339\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Conversation<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1974), a prophetic vision of the intrusion of high tech surveillance into private lives.
