After the opening [for\u00a0Doug Aitken<\/a>\u2019s latest art book,\u00a0Write-In Jerry Brown President<\/span>], a group of us caravanned to Lucques for the gallery dinner. Anderson regaled her tablemates over plates of salted cod and lamb-shank with tales of her genius preteen son, apparently being \u201crecruited by the Pentagon.\u201d Pamela Anderson dominated Richard Prince throughout the dinner, though she wasn\u2019t the only power-player at the table. Wherever Prince is,\u00a0Larry Gagosian<\/a>\u00a0isn\u2019t far behind.<\/p>\n

Bret Easton Ellis<\/a>\u00a0finally broke from his seat, bookended by Anderson and\u00a0James Frey<\/a>, to join editor\u00a0Karen Marta<\/a>\u00a0and me over a couple of glasses of wine. Ellis\u2019s latest tale of \u201980s hedonistic excess,\u00a0The Informers<\/em>, premiered at Sundance days before amid some controversy, a topic that seemed to bore Ellis to no end. He was much more excited about his most recent project, a screenplay on the mysterious suicides of\u00a0Jeremy Blake<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Theresa Duncan<\/a>, two onetime Angelenos who died in New York. Having recently said goodbye to all that to return to the West Coast, he still seemed to be suffering ennui. \u201cI moved back and live here now permanently,\u201d he said, looking askance at the glamorama crowd. \u201cBut somehow I thought it would be different.\u201d<\/p>\n
