And while those factors are important, I would like to emphasise another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Younger generations have less freedom and independence than previous generations did. The area where children are allowed to range unsupervised outside\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk\/wpuploads\/2018\/08\/Play-final-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has shrunk by 90%<\/a>\u00a0since the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents increasingly organise entertainment \u2013 ranging from play dates and sports and music classes to family cinema trips \u2013 for their children, rather than letting them come up with it themselves. Perhaps this can help explain recent reports that many teenagers today\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2024\/feb\/10\/meet-generation-stay-at-home-dont-pay-to-go-clubbing-watch-it-at-home-on-your-phone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">choose to be holed up in their bedrooms<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of childhood freedom isn\u2019t just a result of parental control.
