She\u2019s now earning more than $30,000 annually from her writing\u2014more than she\u2019s ever made.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, if she\u2019d gone the traditional route and landed an agent and a major publisher, Griffin said, the best she could have hoped for would have been a $10,000 advance, and she would have been lucky to sell 1,000 copies\u2014meaning no extra money.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, serializing the novel on her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/@ellegriffin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">newsletter<\/a>&nbsp;means she can include her 11,000-plus subscribers in the creative process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey can comment on each chapter,\u201d Griffin told me. \u201cI\u2019m crowdsourcing my wisdom from them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/the-fight-for-the-future-of-publishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">click to continue reading at The Free Press<\/a> ]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from The Free Press The Fight for the Future of Publishing Ideological fanatics and fear have crippled the major houses.
