American painter Andrew Wyeth dies at 91<\/h1>\n

Artist gained fame for his \u2018Christina\u2019s World\u2019 collection, Helga portraits<\/h2>\n

PHILADELPHIA – Artist Andrew Wyeth, who portrayed the hidden melancholy of the people and landscapes of Pennsylvania\u2019s Brandywine Valley and coastal Maine in works such as \u201cChristina\u2019s World,\u201d died early Friday. He was 91.<\/p>\n

Wyeth died in his sleep at his home in the Philadelphia suburb of Chadds Ford, according to Jim Duff, director of the Brandywine River Museum.<\/p>\n

The son of famed painter and book illustrator N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth gained wealth, acclaim and tremendous popularity on his own. But he chafed under criticism from some experts who regarded him as a facile realist, not an artist but merely an illustrator.<\/p>\n

Wyeth was a secretive man who spent hours tramping the countryside alone. He painted many portraits, working several times with favorite subjects, but said he disliked having someone else watching him paint.<\/p>\n

Much of Wyeth\u2019s work had a melancholy feel \u2014 aging people and brown, dead plants \u2014 but he chose to describe his work as \u201cthoughtful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI do an awful lot of thinking and dreaming about things in the past and the future \u2014 the timelessness of the rocks and the hills \u2014 all the people who have existed there,\u201d he once said. \u201cI prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure in the landscape \u2014 the loneliness of it \u2014 the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn\u2019t show.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think anything like that \u2014 which is contemplative, silent, shows a person alone \u2014 people always feel is sad. Is it because we\u2019ve lost the art of being alone?\u201d<\/p>\n
