Earl Leaf\/Michael Ochs Archives\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>America\u2019s age-old love affair with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/ice-cream-world\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ice cream<\/a>&nbsp;appears to be winding down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumption of regular dairy ice cream, which does not include frozen yogurt, sherbet or non- and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/19\/business\/halo-top-new-recipe\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">low-fat ice creams<\/a>, has been falling for years, according to the US Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1986, the average American ate 18 pounds of regular ice cream, according to the USDA. By 2021, the most recent year of the data, that was down a third to just 12 pounds per person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, ice cream was more than a frozen dessert: It was a lifeline for American brewers during Prohibition and a means to boost morale among troops during World War II. By the 1950s, the sweet, creamy treat had become an American treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But like full-fat milk,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/28\/business\/dr-pepper-history\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">soda<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/23\/business\/lab-grown-meat-explainer\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">red meat<\/a>\u00a0and other former heroes of the American diet, ice cream has been scrutinized for its impact on health and the environment.
