It\u2019s been estimated that the islands are home to more than&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/vulcanospeleology.org\/sym07\/ISV7x08.pdf\">800<\/a>&nbsp;caves. Some are big, some are small, some are underwater, and others are expansive networks of open lava tubes beneath volcanoes&nbsp;\u2014 but only a few are accessible to the public.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of all the islands, the Big Island of Hawaii is the most renowned for its caves, such as&nbsp;<a class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/havo\/planyourvisit\/day-hike-nahuku.htm\">Nahuku<\/a>&nbsp;and Kaumana. But the most distinguished is on the east side of the island in the district of&nbsp;Puna, where Kazumura Cave can be found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kazumura Cave is the\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/world-records\/66733-longest-lava-cave\" target=\"_blank\">longest lava cave<\/a>\u00a0in the world. More than 40 miles long, it descends the east side of the Kilauea volcano to a depth of 3,614 feet. Lava once flowed through this ancient tube system that was active during the\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/hvo\/news\/volcano-watch-ailaau-largest-subaerial-kilauea-lava-flow\" target=\"_blank\">Ailaau eruption<\/a>\u00a0in the 15th century.
