He was 77.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bigjimindustries.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/tanen.png\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"15\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tanen.png\" \/><br \/>\n[Mr. Tanen] compiled an enviable record of box-office hits and critical successes, based in no small part on his talent for identifying films that would appeal to young ticket-buyers, including \u201cE.T.: The Extraterrestrial.\u201d After his studio career, he independently produced films by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/person\/95115\/John-Hughes?inline=nyt-per\" style=\"color: #000066\">John Hughes<\/a>, including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/44952\/Sixteen-Candles\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cSixteen Candles\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/6997\/The-Breakfast-Club\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cThe Breakfast Club.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1980 he helped Universal set a Hollywood record of $290 million for a single studio\u2019s box-office receipts with films like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/10105\/Coal-Miner-s-Daughter\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cCoal Miner\u2019s Daughter,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/60974\/The-Blues-Brothers\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cThe Blues Brothers\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/45290\/Smokey-and-the-Bandit-II\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cSmokey and the Bandit II,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0then broke it two years later. At Paramount, films like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/39095\/Pretty-in-Pink\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cPretty in Pink,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/gst\/movies\/titlelist.html?v_idlist=114125;50435&amp;inline=nyt_ttl\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cTop Gun\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/11577\/Crocodile-Dundee\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cCrocodile Dundee,\u201d<\/a>all released in 1986, earned $600 million, giving Paramount more than double the gross revenues of its nearest competitor. The studio finished first the next year as well.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 1970s, after working as a production supervisor on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/person\/90166\/Milos-Forman?inline=nyt-per\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">Milos Forman<\/a>\u2019s film\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/gst\/movies\/titlelist.html?v_idlist=112611;257550&amp;inline=nyt_ttl\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cTaking Off,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0he went into film production full time, helping to develop projects like \u201cAmerican Graffiti,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/13060\/The-Deer-Hunter\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cThe Deer Hunter,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/45289\/Smokey-and-the-Bandit\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cSmokey and the Bandit\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/movie\/25912\/Jaws\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\">\u201cJaws\u201d<\/a>\u00a0for Universal, MCA\u2019s film subsidiary.<\/p>\n<p>In 1976 he became president of Universal\u2019s film-producing division, and two years later he was named president of Universal Pictures, its distribution arm.
