Some of the novelists of my generation found the mountain beautiful; others found it oppressive. But virtually all of us, whatever our position or attitude, existed in its shade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In spite of the enormity of his shadow, however, I\u2019ve never before written about the author of so many novels I\u2019ve studied and admired. In the two decades since my first book was published, I\u2019ve fielded the boilerplate question about my influences no end of times, name-checking an almost absurdly ragtag crew:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/obituaries\/la-me-shirley-hazzard-20161214-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shirley Hazzard<\/a>, Denis Johnson,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/blogs\/jacket-copy\/story\/2012-05-02\/the-reading-life-interviewing-william-burroughs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">William S. Burroughs<\/a>, Amos Tutuola, Lydia Davis,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/books\/story\/2019-08-06\/toni-morrison-appreciation-20190806\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Toni Morrison<\/a>, John Berger,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-ursula-k-leguin-20180123-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ursula K. Le Guin<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 even, just a few weeks ago, whoever ghost-wrote\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2020-10-15\/eddie-van-halen-david-lee-roth-pasadena-high-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Lee Roth\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0memoir, \u201cCrazy From the Heat.\u201d But one name I\u2019ve conspicuously avoided all these years has been that of McCarthy, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/obituaries\/story\/2023-06-13\/cormac-mccarthy-author-dead-no-country-for-old-men\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">died last week at 89<\/a>.
