And even then, in those early days, the message from my teachers, my parents, and those talking heads on TV was the same: don\u2019t put anything on the internet that you don\u2019t want floating around forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To this day, that\u2019s good advice. But it\u2019s also clear the internet\u2019s memory isn\u2019t exactly the steel trap we were all told it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In (what else?) a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1655608985058267139?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1655608985058267139%7Ctwgr%5Ea1858266284363695d77a0d9f4ac891cbcca676c%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Ftechnology%2F2023%2F05%2F10%2Ftwitter-save-archive%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweet posted last week<\/a>, Twitter CEO Elon Musk said the social media service would be \u201cpurging\u201d user accounts if they lay dormant for long enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The period of inactivity that would prompt an account deletion is pretty long \u2014 Musk said the move would apply to accounts that have gone unused for \u201cseveral years,\u201d and that accounts would be \u201carchived\u201d in some way.
