Kelley<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LDF5BcYd6UM\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>America\u2019s most reclusive comedian isn\u2019t hard to find.&nbsp;<a>Dave Chappelle<\/a>&nbsp;hangs around downtown, buys coffee and shops like any other resident of Yellow Springs, Ohio. He smokes cigarettes and chats with passersby. He knows people, and they know him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yellow Springs is a special place. \u201cGrowing up here, literally on any given Saturday or Sunday, in any house that you walked into, there was going to be someone who was Jewish, someone who was an atheist, someone from a different country, somebody who was a person of color,\u201d says Carmen Brown, a Black village council member whose family has lived in the town for 150 years. \u201cThere was going to be a clown, an astrophysicist, a janitor and a doctor\u2014all hanging out.\u201d Chappelle is a product of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CJudnmQJfYQ\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this environment<\/a>, this culture of \u201cdiscourse without discord,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sign at First Presbyterian Church sums up village politics: \u201c10:30 a.m. Sunday, an eco-feminist interpretation of Genesis 1:3, in person, masks required.\u201d Chappelle has called Yellow Springs, population 3,700, \u201ca\u00a0<a>Bernie Sanders<\/a>\u00a0island in a Trump sea.\u201d The town was a stop on the underground railroad and an early home for formerly enslaved people who\u2019d bought or escaped with their freedom.\u00a0<a>Coretta Scott King<\/a>\u00a0was one of the first Black pupils at\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/antiochcollege.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Antioch College<\/a>, the famously liberal outpost where Chappelle\u2019s father, Bill, taught in the music department and co-founded the civil rights organization Help Us Make a Nation, or H.U.M.A.N.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/features\/2023-dave-chappelle-yellow-springs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">click to continue reading at Bloomberg<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from Bloomberg What Happens When Dave Chappelle Buys Up Your Town As Chappelle\u2019s comedy made him a controversial figure nationally, some of his Ohio neighbors have been getting mad, too.
