Having already drawn criticism from the anti-looting advocacy group\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.savingantiquities.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-decoration: none; color: #007aaa\">SAFE<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;Saving Antiquities for Everyone &#8212; the Ganesha could soon be exhibit A in the back-and-forth between those who favor a hard line against collecting ancient works whose paths since before 1970 are murky, and those who think it makes more sense to give museums some leeway when hard proof is lacking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/2009\/01\/02\/ganesha_3.jpg\" style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-decoration: none; color: #007aaa\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/culturemonster\/images\/2009\/01\/02\/ganesha_3.jpg\" style=\"border-style: initial; border-color: initial; border-width: 0px\" title=\"Ganesha stele bought by Portland Art Museum\" alt=\"Ganesha stele bought by Portland Art Museum\" border=\"0\" width=\"450\" height=\"597\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Guidelines adopted in June by the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aamd.org\/papers\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-decoration: none; color: #007aaa\">\u00a0Assn. of Art Museum Directors (AAMD)<\/a>\u00a0call for museums to research carefully whether an object they want left its country of origin before November 1970.
