Rendon\/The Daily Beast\/Getty\/Christie&#8217;s<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s said that the pillars of the art market come down to the three Ds:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artrights.me\/en\/the-rule-of-3ds-in-the-art-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">death, divorce, or debt<\/a>. It\u2019s in these dramatic instances of transition, financial peril or both that longtime collectors are most motivated to unload their goods, and when they do, the results can be spectacular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May, Sotheby\u2019s scored a huge win with the Macklowe collection auction, a sale made possible by real estate developer Harry Macklowe\u2019s splashy split from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/macklowe-collection-most-valuable-auction-sale\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">his wife, Linda<\/a>. The Macklowes, who had no pre-nuptial agreement, had been married for nearly 60 years and their divorce was bitter: Linda\u2019s legal team claimed her ex, who\u2019d also been shelling out for his French mistress\u2019s Park Avenue apartment, hadn\u2019t\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.celebritynetworth.com\/articles\/billionaire-news\/billionaire-going-divorce-wife-58-years-claims-broke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paid taxes<\/a>\u00a0since the \u201980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the strength of the sale of only 65 lots, including a $61 million Pollock and $48 million Rothko, the Macklowe collection became the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/macklowe-collection-most-valuable-auction-sale\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most expensive<\/a>\u00a0ever to sell at auction: altogether, Sotheby\u2019s did\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/macklowe-collection-most-valuable-auction-sale\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$922.2 million<\/a>\u00a0in sales. \u201cThis sale will&#8230; make history as one of the defining moments in the art market,\u201d Sotheby\u2019s CEO Charles Stewart\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/macklowe-collection-most-valuable-auction-sale\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said at the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Macklowe divorce also produced some hilariously messy rich person behavior. Years prior to the sale, Harry Macklowe paid for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elle.com\/culture\/a26782761\/harry-macklowe-billboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">42-foot-high Times Square billboards<\/a>\u00a0of his and mistress-turned-wife Patricia Landeau\u2019s faces.
