Knox; tracings by Emanuel Zingg; courtesy of the Museum of the Bible Collection, \u00a9Museum of the Bible, 2021.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Scholars have discovered part of the ancient Greek astronomer Hipparchus\u2019s long-lost star catalogue of the\u2014believed to be the first map of the stars\u2014in a manuscript from a Greek Orthodox monastery in Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The historic document, which comprises 146 folios, comes from St. Catherine\u2019s in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, and the majority is now in the collection of the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.museumofthebible.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of the Bible<\/a>\u00a0in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new study published this week in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/00218286221128289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Journal for the History of Astronomy<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;reveals that it is palimpsest manuscript, in which the original ink had been scraped off to reuse the parchment for a new project\u2014and that traces of the original writings can still be deciphered, revealing what appears to be a reference to Hipparchus\u2019s ambitious project to map the stars, including star coordinates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Astronomy historian James Evans told the journal\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-03296-1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Nature<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that it was a \u201crare\u201d and \u201cremarkable\u201d find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/medieval-parchment-worlds-oldest-star-map-2195744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">click to continue reading at artnet<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from artnet The World\u2019s Oldest Map of the Stars, Lost for Thousands of Years, Has Been Found in the Pages of a Medieval Parchment The ancient Greek astronomer Hipparchus catalogued the coordinates of the stars.
