It\u2019s a pain, sometimes. Clutching and shifting in bumper-to-bumper traffic wears you out. My wife can\u2019t drive my car, which limits our transit options. And when I\u2019m at the wheel, I can\u2019t hold a cold, delicious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2022\/04\/slushie-icee-company-quiktrip-freezoni\/629728\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slushie<\/a>\u00a0in one hand, at least not safely. But despite the inconvenience, I love a manual transmission. I love the feeling that I am\u00a0<em>operating<\/em>\u00a0my car, not just driving it. That\u2019s why I\u2019ve driven stick shifts for the past 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That streak may soon be over. When it comes time to replace my current car, I probably won\u2019t be able to get another like it. In 2000, more than 15 percent of new and used cars sold by the auto retailer CarMax came with stick shifts; by 2020, that figure\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmax.com\/articles\/stick-shift-index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">had dropped<\/a>\u00a0to 2.4 percent. Among the hundreds of new car models for sale in the United States this year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carfax.com\/blog\/manual-transmission-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only about 30<\/a>\u00a0can be purchased with a manual transmission. Electric cars, which now account for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-09\/us-electric-car-sales-reach-key-milestone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 5 percent<\/a>\u00a0of car sales, don\u2019t even have gearboxes. There are rumors that Mercedes-Benz plans to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hypebeast.com\/2022\/6\/mercedes-benz-to-phase-out-manual-transmission-by-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">retire<\/a>\u00a0manuals entirely by the end of next year, all around the world, in a decision\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.automobilwoche.de\/agenturmeldungen\/mercedes-stellt-2023-komplett-auf-automatik-um\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">driven partly<\/a>\u00a0by electrification; Volkswagen is said to be dropping its own\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drive.com.au\/news\/volkswagen-to-phase-out-manual-transmissions-by-2030-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by 2030<\/a>, and other brands are sure to follow.
