As the nationally-known host of the PBS children&#8217;s program\u00a0<em>Mister Rogers&#8217; Neighborhood\u00a0<\/em>and perhaps one of the most universally adored public figures in the country, Fred&#8217;s personal life was strikingly modest. He seemed the least likely person you&#8217;d expect to be interested in cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet: take a wider view, and his program showed children that the automobile is a fixture in modern American life over the second half of the 20th century, introducing them to everything from seat belts to automated car washes to early EV efforts. Fred Rogers himself wasn&#8217;t much of a gearhead, but he knew just as much as anyone how much emotion can be wrapped up in a car, quietly maintaining a 1928&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/news\/37877\/this-1929-ford-model-a-hides-rally-car-mods-and-a-9000-rpm-cosworth-engine\" target=\"_blank\">Ford Model A<\/a>&nbsp;Sport Coupe over the decades that had been given to him by his parents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, a survey of the 900+ episodes of&nbsp;<em>Mister Rogers\u2019 Neighborhood&nbsp;<\/em>indicates that Fred understood there are lots of kids (and adults) who love anything with wheels.
