At the opening night of JM Synge\u2019s\u00a0<em>Playboy of the Western World<\/em>\u00a0in Dublin in 1907, audience members were triggered into rioting, including throwing projectiles at the stage, because of its shocking content \u2013 including a portrayal of patricide and scenes involving ladies\u2019 knickers. Sinn F\u00e9in leader Arthur Griffith described the play as \u2018a vile and inhuman story told in the foulest language we have ever listened to from a public platform\u2019. WB Yeats, who had not expected such a reaction, berated the audience for having \u2018<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/celtic-drama-ballad-of-an-irish-playboy-433571.html\" target=\"_blank\">disgraced yourselves again<\/a>\u2019. Synge, however, was quietly triumphant,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/how-110-year-old-playboy-caused-a-riot-1.2952274\" target=\"_blank\">writing to his fianc\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0the morning after: \u2018It is better any day to have the row we had last night, than to have your play fizzling out in half-hearted applause. Now we\u2019ll be talked about.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost 115 years later, the idea that art can and\u00a0<em>should<\/em>\u00a0surprise us in shocking or even hurtful ways feels like a thing of the past. The art world today is often so terrified of unruly audiences, who these days take to hurling tweets instead of rotten fruit, that trigger warnings are now ubiquitous.
