PHOTO:\u00a0CALTECH OPTICAL OBSERVATORIES\/IPAC<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As the armada of satellites circling Earth grows, a new study shows that astronomy images are being marred by streaks of reflected sunlight left by the fast-moving objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SpaceX alone launched nearly 150 of its expanding&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/spacexs-future-depends-on-a-gigantic-rocket-and-42-000-internet-satellites-11640687404?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fleet of Starlink telecommunications satellites<\/a>&nbsp;in the past month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/ac470a\" target=\"_blank\">the study<\/a>, published Jan. 14 in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, researchers examined the effects of Starlink satellites on about 300,000 images taken by an instrument at the Palomar Observatory in Southern California.
