FORMER Senate majority leader Harry Reid was at the center of efforts to transform the UFO debate into a serious political issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades, discussions about\u00a0unidentified aerial phenomena<\/a>\u00a0were often restricted to the fringes of American politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reid<\/a>\u00a0attended a series of meetings in the mid-1990s alongside real estate magnate Robert Bigelow, parapsychologist Hal Puthoff, and \u201cavowed\u201d ufologist Harrison Schmitt,\u00a0Politico<\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bigelow wanted to talk about aliens and the politician was introduced to the real estate tycoon through renowned\u00a0Nevada<\/a>\u00a0reporter and journalist George Knapp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a\u00a0New York Times\u00a0<\/a>piece, Reid recalled that his staffers said: \u201cStay the hell away from this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
