NEEDLEMAN<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.wsj.net\/im-416063?width=1260&amp;height=840\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the dawn of civilization, humans have had only one world in which to live: the real one. But tech visionaries say&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/roblox-facebook-see-the-metaverse-as-key-to-the-internets-next-phase-11629286200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we\u2019ll soon have an alternative<\/a>: a virtual world where our digital avatars and those of people in our communities and around the globe come together to work, shop, attend classes, pursue hobbies, enjoy social gatherings and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immersive videogames and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/twenty-one-pilots-in-concertas-roblox-avatars-11633282887?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\">virtual concerts<\/a>\u00a0have given us a taste of this world. But visionaries say the metaverse, as this world has been dubbed, will be far more engaging and robust, not only mirroring the real world in all its three-dimensional complexity but also extending it to allow us to be and do what previously could only be imagined. Walk on the moon in your pajamas? Watch a baseball game from the pitcher\u2019s mound? Frolic in a field of unicorns\u2014or be a unicorn yourself? In the metaverse, tech visionaries say, just about anything will be possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe metaverse is going to be the biggest revolution in computing platforms the world has seen\u2014bigger than the mobile revolution, bigger than the web revolution,\u201d says Marc Whitten, whose title is \u201csenior vice president and general manager of create\u201d at San Francisco-based Unity Software Inc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unity is building tools and services to enable people to create metaverse content.
