\u201cI am the future \/ I\u2019m tomorrow \/ I am the end.\u201d \u2014 David Bowie, \u201cTelling Lies\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the music industry was going to undergo a tumultuous shift, it might as well have had David Bowie providing the soundtrack. On September 11th, 1996,  Bowie\u2019s \u201cTelling Lies\u201d became the first ever downloadable single by a major artist, arriving on Bowie\u2019s website in three different formats, released over three weeks (a traditional single was later released in November).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a song, \u201cTelling Lies\u201d is \u2026 well, it\u2019s pretty generic drum \u2018n\u2019 bass with some brooding Bowie lyrics (\u201cswear to me in times of war and stress\u201d) and no real hook. It\u2019s dark and maybe reflects the singer\u2019s time spent touring as a co-headliner with Nine Inch Nails earlier that year. As AllMusic noted<\/a> at the time about Earthling<\/em>, the album from which \u201cLies\u201d served as the first single, \u201cThe record frequently sounds as if the beats were simply grafted on top of pre-existing songs. Never are the songs broken open by a new form; they are fairly conventional Bowie songs with fancy production.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
