(Image courtesy of Sublime)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>On July 30, 1996, Sublime released its self-titled mainstream debut on MCA Records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the Long Beach band had already put out two independent albums prior to this one, \u201cSublime\u201d was different. It went on to sell over 18 million copies worldwide, spawning several singles including \u201cWhat I Got,\u201d \u201cSanteria,\u201d \u201cWrong Way\u201d and \u201cDoin\u2019 Time.\u201d The album was popular on both radio and MTV, thanks to an eclectic sound that intertwined elements of punk, ska, reggae, funk and hip-hop, as well as samples from artists like Bob Marley, George Gershwin, The Specials and The Who.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI vividly remember sitting with my co-workers at the radio station [KFMA 102.1\/FM] in Tuscon, Arizona when we first heard \u2018What I Got,\u2019 and we were like, \u2018Wow, this is going to be huge,\u2019\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2021\/06\/09\/kroqs-ted-stryker-announces-hes-leaving-the-stryker-klein-morning-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">former KROQ DJ Ted Stryker<\/a>\u00a0said during a recent phone interview. \u201cWhat did we know? We were a bunch of young idiots, but it was obvious that this band was going to be something great. That band, that album cover, these songs \u2026 they are stronger than ever and they still, 25 years later, feel so fresh. It sounds like summer. It sounds like we should be going to the beach. I don\u2019t know if at the time they knew how timeless these songs were going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the band and those close to it, Sublime\u2019s breakthrough success also came at a time of great tragedy.
