Richard Hell doesn\u2019t like being called a punk. It\u2019s surprising, considering he\u2019s remembered as a punk innovator. He\u2019s a man who defined New York\u2019s 1970s CBGB era, influenced the Sex Pistols and was a member of some of the greatest punk bands of all time: Television, The Heartbreakers and The Voidoids \u2014 before walking away from it all. But he\u2019s sure: \u201cI\u2019m not a punk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to InsideHook from his home, Hell is an introspective person. He has already lived three or four different lives outside of music, having arrived in New York as a poet, then a publisher, an author, an actor and a film critic. He has even directed a short film. But it\u2019s the records where he solidified his status as an icon: that skinny, bare-chested frame on the cover of\u00a0Blank Generation<\/em>, the hazy, mischievous glare \u2014 tired after weeks, maybe months, of shenanigans. And his singing, which was more playful and debonair than his growling punk contemporaries, set him apart.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
