Photo courtesy of the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, Greece.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists are one step closer to unlocking the secrets of the 2,000-year-old Antikythera Mechanism, considered the world\u2019s first computer, thanks to a new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/518734183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">computer-generated reconstruction<\/a>&nbsp;of the ancient device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers from the University College London have unveiled their computational model\u00a0in the journal\u00a0<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-84310-w\" target=\"_blank\">Scientific Reports<\/a><\/em>, and are currently in the midst of building a physical replica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discovered in 1901 off the coast of the Greek island of\u00a0Antikythera, the mechanism was actually an\u00a0astrological clock that would have shown the movement of the five known planets and predicted astronomical events such as the phases of the moon and lunar and solar eclipses\u2014but with the earth placed at the center of the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/antikythera-mechanism-1951845\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">click to continue reading at artnet<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from artnet This Mysterious Ancient Greek Device May Be the First Computer.
