Miranda \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a tale of sex and death and Teletubbies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1998, programmer and animator Tom Fulp released an online video game titled \u201cTeletubby Fun Land\u201d that featured the characters from the British children\u2019s television program getting drunk and stoned and engaged in acts of devil worship. One of the game\u2019s narratives showed a version of Po (the red one) getting it on with a sheep.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the site grew in popularity, the BBC, which aired \u201cTeletubbies,\u201d grew appalled. In 1999, the British broadcaster demanded that Fulp, then a college student, take the site down. He initially acquiesced, but within days, \u201cTeletubby Fun Land\u201d was right back up \u2014 with Fulp noting that parody was protected under laws governing free speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs far as I have always known, Mad magazine makes a living out of doing the same thing,\u201d Fulp\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/1999\/09\/oh-those-wacky-tele-bubbys\/\" target=\"_blank\">told Wired<\/a>\u00a0at the time. \u201cI am pretty sure U.S. laws protect me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2020-12-28\/end-of-adobe-flash-animation-means-end-of-many-digital-art-projects-internet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">click to continue reading at LAT<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from The LA Times Why the end of Flash animation marks the end of an era for creativity on the web By\u00a0CAROLINA A.
