Have you ever been in more than one place at the same time? If you\u2019re much bigger than an atom, the answer will be no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But atoms and particles are governed by the rules of quantum mechanics, in which several different possible situations can coexist at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quantum systems are ruled by what\u2019s called a \u201cwave function\u201d: a mathematical object that describes the probabilities of these different possible situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And these different possibilities can coexist in the wave function as what is called a \u201csuperposition\u201d of different states. For example, a particle existing in several different places at once is what we call \u201cspatial superposition\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s only when a measurement is carried out that the wave function \u201ccollapses\u201d and the system ends up in one definite state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generally, quantum mechanics applies to the tiny world of atoms and particles. The jury is still out on what it means for large-scale objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our research,\u00a0published today in Optica<\/a>, we propose an experiment that may resolve this thorny question once and for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
