{"id":10981,"date":"2020-09-27T10:53:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-27T17:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/BigJimIndustries.com\/wordpress\/?p=10981"},"modified":"2020-09-28T10:56:27","modified_gmt":"2020-09-28T17:56:27","slug":"sign-o-the-new-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bigjimindustries.com\/wordpress\/2020\/09\/27\/sign-o-the-new-times\/","title":{"rendered":"Sign O&#8217; the New Times"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spin.com\/2020\/09\/prince-collaborators-sign-o-the-times-interview\/?mc_cid=f65e4365dc&amp;mc_eid=455516fb97\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">from SPIN<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prince Collaborators Reflect on 1987 Opus \u2018Sign O\u2019 the Times\u2019<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;[Ideas] just flowed out of him like he was a conduit to the universe,&#8221; says Revolution keyboardist Matt Fink&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spin.com\/author\/ron-hart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ron Hart<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/static-spin-com\/files\/2020\/08\/GettyImages-1149250881-1598541117.jpg\" alt=\"Prince\"\/><figcaption><em><small>CREDIT:<\/small>\u00a0Fryderyk Gabowicz\/picture alliance via Getty Images<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By the mid-80s,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spin.com\/tag\/prince\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prince<\/a>&nbsp;was a global superstar thanks to the worldwide success of 1984\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Purple Rain<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when he started work on his follow-up \u2014\u00a0eventually released on March 31, 1987 as the double-LP\u00a0<em>Sign O\u2019 the Times<\/em>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0it came amidst a creative tsunami that saw two more classic albums with his longtime band the Revolution (1985\u2019s\u00a0<em>Around The World in A Day\u00a0<\/em>and the following year\u2019s\u00a0<em>Parade<\/em>),\u00a0the 1986 film\u00a0<em>Under The Cherry Moon\u00a0<\/em>and three ultimately shelved titles (<em>Dream Factory, Camille\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Crystal Ball<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who worked closest to him during this period, including Revolution keyboard wizard Matt Fink (aka Dr. Fink), longtime engineer Susan Rogers and bassist Levi Seacer, Jr., it was astounding to see such a voluminous output from Prince during this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis creative mind is just so wild,\u201d Fink tells&nbsp;<em>SPIN<\/em>. \u201cLike he was always thinking of stuff. He was always thinking and conjuring up ideas. It just flowed out of him like he was a conduit to the universe. He was a muse of the universe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had a lot of personal time with him,\u201d Seacer explains. \u201cAnd when I was with him by himself, it was really like sitting with one of your regular buddies. And it was so interesting being around somebody whose fountain was just overflowing with creativity, and then you go back into the real world and everybody\u2019s fountains are cut off. So what he was good at was trying to encourage you to open that fountain and say, \u2018Hey, you got a lot in there; why don\u2019t you just let it out so you can put more in?\u2019 I didn\u2019t realize I could actually do all of that.
