Driven by a cornucopia of film clip and talking heads\u2014led by actors, directors, historians and critics\u2014it delivers\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/the-movie-nudity-maestro-jim-mcbride-on-15-years-of-mr-skin-and-that-scarlett-johansson-scene\" target=\"_blank\">a thorough chronological timeline of cinematic nakedness<\/a>. Too bad, then, that when it comes to actually delving into the most interesting aspects of its topic, Danny Wolf\u2019s non-fiction film proves, ahem, skin-deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Debuting on VOD on August 18,\u00a0<em>Skin<\/em>\u00a0is most valuable as a survey of movie nudity, ranging from the seminal 1887 work of Eadweard Muybridge to the mainstream\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/to-be-finally-freed-from-the-clutches-of-fifty-shades-of-grey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BDSM fantasies of 2015\u2019s\u00a0<em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em>\u00a0with just about every other notable example in-between at least briefly mentioned. That means that whatever film first aroused you likely appears in Wolf\u2019s doc, be it silent film star Audrey Munson\u2019s\u00a0<em>Inspiration<\/em>\u00a0(1915), Mae West\u2019s sexual innuendo-laced 1930s output, Cecille B. DeMille\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Sign of the Cross<\/em>\u00a0(1932), Jayne Mansfield\u2019s\u00a0<em>Promises! Promises!<\/em>\u00a0(1963), Michelangelo Antonioni\u2019s\u00a0<em>Blow-Up\u00a0<\/em>(1966), Peter Bogdanovich\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Last Picture Show<\/em>\u00a0(1971), Bernardo Bertolucci\u2019s\u00a0<em>Last Tango in Paris<\/em>\u00a0(1972), Tinto Brass\u2019\u00a0<em>Caligula\u00a0<\/em>(1979), Amy Heckerling\u2019s\u00a0<em>Fast Times at Ridgemont High<\/em>\u00a0(1982), Paul Verhoeven\u2019s\u00a0<em>Basic Instinct<\/em>\u00a0(1992), or Paul Weitz\u2019s\u00a0<em>American Pie\u00a0<\/em>(1999).
