And back then, just like today, some\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/news-photo\/collage-of-various-newspaper-headlines-related-to-the-news-photo\/1219167361\">people balked at the idea of the government<\/a>\u00a0telling them what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some protested and openly defied local orders as World War I raged in Europe, J. Alexander Navarro, assistant director at the University of Michigan\u2019s Center for the History of Medicine, wrote this month for The Conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 2,000 members of the so-called Anti-Mask League gathered in San Francisco in 1919 \u201cfor a rally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/mask-resistance-during-a-pandemic-isnt-new-in-1918-many-americans-were-slackers-141687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">denouncing the mask ordinance<\/a>\u00a0and proposing ways to defeat it,\u201d Navarro wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sound familiar?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/news\/coronavirus\/article244267462.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">click to continue reading at The Charlotte Observer<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from The Charlotte Observer What did people say about wearing masks in the 1918 pandemic?
